Jacob Warren: Zola

The electric bass has plenty of extended techniques to make extraordinary sounds, but so does the double bass. Bassist and composer Jacob Warren wrote “Zola” to explore the use of “harp harmonics.”

The effect is achieved by placing your thumb on a harmonic and using your fingers to pluck the string. It can be done with both hands to create a gorgeous flow of notes like that of a harp.

Watch “Zola,” and then get your bass out to follow along with Warren’s instructional video on the technique. He also has the sheet music for “Zola” for sale on his website.
