Playboy Jazz Festival: the bassists

This weekend’s Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl will include two days of great music and great bass players.

Highlights include Dave Holland with his big band, Esperanza Spalding and John Patitucci with the Wayne Shorter Quartet.

Here’s a more complete lineup:

Saturday performances include Jimmy Cobb’s So What Band featuring Wallace Roney, Norman Brown’s Summer Storm 2009, The Neville Brothers, The Jack Sheldon Orchestra, Esperanza Spalding, Jon Faddis Quartet, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and Pete Escovedo Orchestra (with Sheila E.).

Sunday performances include Dave Holland Big Band, the Wayne Shorter Quartet, Monty Alexander’s Jazz & Roots, Oscar Hernandez and the L.A. Salsa All Stars, Kenny G, Patti Austin and King Sunny Ade.

Shows start on Saturday at 2:30pm and on Sunday at 2pm. Tickets range from $20 to $145, from ticketmaster.com.
