RIP Peter Steele

Peter SteeleType O Negative bassist and frontman Peter Steele has passed away at the age of 48. Though an autopsy has yet to be done, it seems Steele died of heart failure. A statement issued by his family said he “died suddenly Wednesday, April 14, 2010, after a short illness…”

Steele’s passing has come as a shock to those around him. Though he had dealt with substance abuse and depression in the past, he had been in good health. Fellow band members posted an official statement on the group’s website, saying “Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to “Dead Again” released in 2007.”

In addition to being the driving force behind Type O Negative, Steele also composed music for film soundtracks, including “Freddy Vs. Jason” and “Mortal Kombat.”

I’m not familiar with Type O Negative’s music, although I had heard of Peter through Bass Player Magazine. My condolences to his family, friends and bandmates.
