In Memoriam: Mick Karn

Mick KarnAfter a brave battle with cancer, former Japan bassist Mick Karn has passed away at the age of 52. The fretless bassist left an indelible mark on the ‘70s and ‘80s low-end scene with his unique style and phrasing. After glam rockers Japan split up, he collaborated with Bauhaus vocalist Peter Murphy in the group Dalis Car, as well as worked with artists such as Gary Numan and Kate Bush.

A statement on his website announced the sad news. “It’s with profound sadness that we have to inform you that Mick finally lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at 4.30pm today, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all.”

Our condolences go to the family and friends of Mick Karn.

Mick was such a massive influence on my life during my
torrid early teenage. Such a gigantic loss for me I can’t even
begin to describe. Mick, you were a genius both musically and
creatively. I will always remember your ‘bass-shuffle’ across the
stage. RIP, heaven has another gain.
