The Music of Paul Chambers (Volume 1)

The Music of Paul Chambers (Volume 1)Author Mikko Nurmi’s The Music of Paul Chambers (Volume 1) is a new book offering a comprehensive look at the style of one of the great jazz bassists, Paul Chambers.

Through the use of full transcriptions of Chambers’ work, Nurmi includes insights through analysis and theory, as well as related exercises.

“It may be helpful just to see what someone like Miles played, but the books don’t really teach anything about why Miles did what he did, what his thinking was,” Nurmi said. “That’s what’s needed.”

The Music of Paul Chambers (Volume 1) is a 120 page book written in standard notation (no tab).

Chambers (1935-1969) was a member of both the Miles Davis Quintet and the John Coltrane Quartet in the late 50’s and recorded hundreds of albums during his legendary, but short career. Chambers also performed with Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Kelly and Jackie McLean and was a band leader himself.

Nurmi is currently working on a new book, The Music of Ron Carter due to release in the fall.
