Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet: Toys, with Buster Williams (1972)
About a week ago, we shared an awesome video of Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters (anchored by the awesome rhythm section duo of bassist Paul Jackson and drummer Mike Clark), performing “Spank-A-Lee” in 1974.
This time around, we’re going back two years earlier, to feature Herbie’s “Mwandishi Sextet”, anchored by bassist Buster Williams.
In between his time with Miles Davis and the release of his seminal Headhunters album, Herbie Hancock started to really stretch out and find his own sound. Here’s an awesome clip of his Mwandishi Sextet playing the tune “Toys” on French broadcast TV in 1972.
Buster brings the tune in, reaching into the high registers before dropping it back down to get the band in on the action. Not stuck to straight quarter notes, Williams explores the chord changes to bring new sounds and textures to the song.
