Bass of the Week: Overwater Basses Expression Semi-Acoustic Bass

Overwater Basses Expression

U.K.-based company Overwater Basses stretches things with their Expression model, a semi-acoustic bass built with a solid spruce top and 3? deep hollow Central American mahogany body bound in Cocobolo. Its body has elements of a violin-shape and a single-cut with a the lower horn cutaway for better access to up to the 22nd fret.

Available in 4, 5, and 6-string versions, the Expression’s neck is a choice of 3-piece maple and walnut or maple and mahogany laminates. Its fingerboard is rosewood except for the fretless version, which is ebony.

Electronics on the bass include a custom Headway piezo pickup built into the Overwater made rosewood bridge and an Overwater/John East design preamp. The controls are fitted into the upper bout.

The Overwater Expression is handmade in the U.K. For more info, check out the Overwater Basses website.

  1. I’m glad Chris May & everybody is starting to get the word out on the Expression.
I’ve had mine since 2007. It does exactly what I need for a person who doesn’t play upright/acoustic bass.

  2. What’s the scale length? Any options on scale length, or all one length?
