The Who’s “Tommy” Gets Super Deluxe Reissue

If The Who’s Tommy continues to thrill you more than 40 years after its release, get ready for your mind to be blown.

The band has released a 4-disc super deluxe limited edition of the 1969 rock opera featuring a slew of demos and outtakes (including 20 previously unreleased tracks), live 1969 concert versions of songs from the record, and digitally remastered and 5.1 Hi Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-ray editions of the album.

An 80-page hardback book about the landmark album is also in the package, as is a rare album poster.

For the as-yet-uninitiated, Tommy, arguably The Who’s breakout album, told the tale of a “deaf, dumb, and blind kid,” who becomes a messianic figure as a result of his almost otherworldly pinball playing skills, detailed in the rock radio staple, “Pinball Wizard.” “I’m Free” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It” are other well-known songs from the classic album.

As part of the story, Tommy is also subjected to disturbing family abuse, with some of which is described in two songs by late bassist John Entwistle, “Cousin Kevin” and “Fiddle About.” According to The Who’s website, Entwistle wrote the “nasty” songs on the record at primary songwriter Pete Townshend’s request.
