Blake Branch: “For Once In My Life” Bass Line

It has been quite a while since we’ve featured a video by Blake Branch. This one is actually over three years old, but is well worth sharing.

Blake transcribed the complete bass line on Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life,” which of course was masterfully played by James Jamerson.

Almost as impressive is the tone Blake gets from his 1973 Jazz Bass. (He later grabs his Fodera Imperial 5-string, tuned E-C, to solo over top).

“I picked this tune because the bassline is functional and incredibly grooving, as well as improvisational,” Blake shared. “Jamerson was truly listening and reacting to the vocals and the solo. I want to better incorporate those elements in my own style of bass playing.”

  1. I also practiced this tune as well. Had a real hard time memorizing the entire line. I just had to make sure I remember every bit because line was too good to miss even in the tiny details.
