Thumbscrew Releases Self-Titled Debut, Featuring Michael Formanek

ThumbscrewThumbscrew, a new modern jazz trio, composed of veterans from the scene, including double bassist Michael Formanek, has released its self-titled debut album.

Formanek, who has worked with everyone from Elvis Costello to Stan Getz, has joined forces with guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Tomas Fujwara to create Thumbscrew and its first album, which was recorded live in the studio. And while all three have been involved in many projects during their careers, the work they’ve created for Thumbscrew is for the trio alone.

“It really is a three-composer trio, and all of our tunes have our basic aesthetics attached. But we want everybody to have input. Nobody’s afraid to make a decision. It’s one of the first co-ops I’ve been in where everyone’s really willing to take control at any given moment,” Formanek said.

To hear how the band’s methods work, give the album’s opening track, “Cheap Knock Off” a listen:

Thumbscrew is available on CD and digital formats (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
