The Lowdown with Dr. D: A Call for Questions

Donovan Stokes

Over the years, I’ve received questions from aspiring bassists, and many of those questions have turned into the Lowdown columns you read here.

I’d love to do more of this. Please send me questions you’d like to see me cover in future Lowdown columns.

You can send them to [email protected] or post them in the comments below.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks for reading.

  1. Which would you suggest to be more useful, a low b-string or an extension to the e-string for drop tunings?

Hello there DrD, as a relatively new conscript to the ranks of upright, I would like to either read or view any recommendations from you regarding the most efficient/effective way of working on accuracy/intonation.I should stress that I’m still very much on the nursery slopes. Many thanks for this and of course all your valuable profferings. Pete (Birdbass) Ellis

Perhaps you could do a segment on how to properly set up the upright bass. Maybe mention the importance of a good luthier and some of the online resources available. Also, another segment on amplification may be beneficial to some people just starting out. Pickup choices, fitment, types of amplifiers, possible needs depending on room size and material being played, etc. Just a thought…
