Pianist/composer Hiromi’s ninth album, Alive, marks the return of her trio project, with contrabassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. This is the third album for the trio, following the 2011 release Voice and the 2013 release, Move.
For Hiromi, the album’s title has two meanings — one is related to the experience of living.
The other is about playing live, particularly in the trio. The goal was to make a studio album that sounds like it was recorded live in front of an audience, she says.
“Being in a trio is great, because of the understanding that passes between them”, she notes. “Anthony is an amazing improviser. He composes incredible counter-lines when I solo, and he always plays something to make [the music] shine even more.”
