Foo Fighters Announce 2015 North American Tour Dates Supporting “Sonic Highways”
The Foo Fighters’ tour supporting the album/show Sonic Highways will hit North America in July, opening with a spectacular show at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. The tour also marks the 20th anniversary of the band’s first album release.
D.C. is one of the cities featured in the Foo’s Sonic Highways television show on HBO, which documents the making of the album of the same name in eight recording studios in eight cities across the U.S. The HBO show is billed by the band as being “A Love Letter to the History of American Music,” and each episode features interviews with the visited city’s musicians, who help reveal the city’s musical heritage. Some then play with the band on songs composed with those interviews in mind.
Foo Fighters frontman/founder Dave Grohl grew up in D.C.’s Virginia suburbs and cut his teeth in D.C.’s 1980s punk scene, which is prominently featured in the D.C. episode of Sonic Highways. The RFK show is set to include performances from Trouble Funk, plus Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett, LL Cool J and Trombone Shorty, all of whom appeared in various episodes of the show, a motorcycle rally, BBQ and fireworks.
While other shows won’t pack as many guests, the July 18 show in Boston will feature guests Mission of Burma (Clint Conley — bassist/singer/co-founder), while a number of shows in July and August will feature guests Royal Blood (bassist/singer Mike Kerr). The North American leg of the tour for the band, featuring bassist Nate Mendel, will run through Oct. 7.
The band will also play two dates in South Africa this month before heading to South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe to play shows in the first half of 2015.
