Bobby Vega Joins Steve Kimock for Jerry Garcia Tribute Tour
Bass whiz Bobby Vega will be touring the Northeast with guitarist Steve Kimock as part of a tribute to Jerry Garcia in March. The tour kicks off on March 10th at New York City’s Highline Ballroom before heading down to Gypsy Sally’s in Washington, D.C. to snake up and down the East Coast. The trek wraps up at the Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, Pennsylvania just outside of Philadelphia.
The members of the band each have connections to Garcia’s legacy. Vega and Kimock played with Garcia in the late ‘80s and have worked with numerous members of the Grateful Dead throughout their careers. “Mickey Hart took me to [my first] Grateful Dead show,” Vega told us. “I learned so much sonically from those guys.”
The rest of the band includes Jeff Chimenti, Bill Vitt, Dan Lebowitz and John Morgan Kimock. “Steve is great on his own and I do what I do, but we have great chemistry. We’ve been playing off and on since ‘82. When we play it comes out as real music,” Vega states. “Jeff Chimenti, the keyboard player, is over the top. He understands all the harmonies but he doesn’t assault you with it. It’s a treat to play with Jeff and Steve and the guys.”
