Unreleased Live Red Garland Trio Recording Released, Featuring Leroy Vinnegar

Red Garland Trio: Swingin on the Korner: Live at Keystone KornerGood things can be found on dusty old cassette tapes — like live music made by three jazz legends playing as a trio.

Swingin on the Korner: Live at Keystone Korner by the Red Garland Trio with Philly Joe Jones and Leroy Vinnegar offers more than 150 minutes of previously unreleased Garland music.

The tracks for the album were pulled from cassette tapes taken from the soundboard at the jazz trio’s December 1977 stand at the Keystone Korner club in San Francisco.

“It’s a beautiful record that celebrates all their memories,” said co-producer Zev Feldman, who notes how important Vinnegar’s warm tone was to the creation of the trio’s sound. Vinnegar was well-known for his “walking” bass line and even earned the nickname, “The Walker.”

The package not only features previously unreleased music, but also a booklet with many unreleased photos and new essays and interviews about the players.

Check out how the package came together. It’s pretty wonderful stuff.
