The Interludes, Featuring Ryan Madora: The Lizard

Earlier this year, Nashville bassist and No Treble contributor Ryan Madora released the self-titled debut with her new group, The Interludes. Inspired by the great rhythm sections from Stax, Motown and Muscle Shoals, the band’s vibe throws back to the instrumental stylings of Booker T. and the MG’s while bringing a modern touch of Medeski, Martin, and Wood.

“I’m really proud of this record,” Madora shares. “There’s nothing like the collaborative force of three players in a room together, bouncing ideas off one another, and giving each other space to improvise.”

Here’s a clip of the trio grooving on “The Lizard”, a tune named after an incident during the album’s recording. “As we gathered in the rehearsal room, we spotted a lizard running across the floor,” Madora explains. “It hid somewhere behind the keyboard rig and the drum set, but we managed to find it and release it outside. We all laughed about it for awhile and figured it would be good inspiration for a song.”

The bassist lays down a solid foundation to set the atmosphere before digging into unison lines and a tasty solo.

Very nice, melodic, grooving, and pleasant to listen to. Maybe not groundbreaking, but it’s really tough to break new ground these days. Really liked Ryan’s playing throughout. Great job!
