John Davis and Janek Gwizdala Team Up for Bass Duo Album
The double bass meets the electric bass in a new album from John Davis and Janek Gwizdala, aptly entitled Bass Duo. The six-song album features the bassists in an inspired state that was captured in a rush.
“Recorded live to tape (yes real tape) in under an hour, this album brings together two long-time bass playing friends and collaborators in a unique bass duet setting,” the album’s description reads.
Davis and Gwizdala teeter between structured and unstructured music, starting with the bebop-ish “Brooklyn Blues” and “Waltz in Db” before exploring space more with songs entitled “Ambient” and “Improvisation”.
Each player also takes turns on the leads. Davis supports Gwizdala with a big, warm walking bass on the blues while Gwizdala returns the favor with top-notch chordal comping. (Check out his latest book on bass chords.) Naturally, both players exhibit beautiful melodic ideas executed with heart and experience.
