Bass of the Week: PHD Guitars Kai Eckhardt Signature Bass
PHD Bass Guitars luthier Parizad Hatcher recently shared photos of her latest creation for bass master Kai Eckhardt, and it’s stunning. Built as a signature model, the bass is a single cut fretless featuring some amazing woodworking.
“[The] top wood combinations are Redwood Burl, Ebony, Walnut and Quilted Maple. [It’s] body wood is Quilted Mahogany,” Hatcher writes. “Neck is Birdseye Maple and the fingerboard is quartered Macassar Ebony with Maple fret marker inlays.” She also uses ebony for the headstock faceplate, while the pickup covers use cutouts of the top wood to continue the design. Glow in the dark side dots were installed for better visibility on dark stages.
Other features include Nordstrand pickups, a Bartolini PHD preamp, and a Graph Tech piezo system. Hardware includes Hipshot Ultralight tuners and a Hipshot bridge, all in a gold finish.
