Bilal: Winning Hand

Bilal has one of the best voices in the neo-soul and jazz worlds, so it’s only right he has one of the best bassists, too. You can tell how Conley “Tone” Whitfield earned his nickname in this clip of “Winning Hand” recorded live for KEXP.

Utilizing the upper register of the bass, Whitfield sets up a killer groove with a dubby tone. His sensitive playing also helps to transition between the song’s style changes.

And check out that pickguard!

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. Connect with Kevin on Facebook and check his performance schedule on his website.
