Bass of the Week: Polaris Basses Shorty “Mango”
This week we’re checking out an exotic number from Australia’s Polaris Basses. This Shorty model is dubbed the “Mango” due to its striking mango top covering a sapele body. Its neck is a laminate of maple, purple heart, and koa that has a highly figured piece of wenge for a fretboard. As you may surmise from the model name, the instrument has a shortened 30-inch scale.
For electronics, Polaris opted to fit it with a Delano Xtender pickup that can be toggled between parallel, single-coil, and series operation. It’s matched to a Noll 3-band preamp. “Clarity and definition in spades with a mighty bottom end,” the company says of its tone.
