Calling all double bassists around the world! The Bass Coalition has announced their annual summer workshop will be held on June 26th and 27th. This year’s event will be virtual, allowing anyone around the globe to join in on the action.

The Bass Coalition faculty will be joined by three outstanding guest artists: renowned educator Marcos Machado, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra principal Ju-Fang Liu, and jazz great Katie Thiroux! The workshop will feature masterclasses and clinics on all things bass.

Faculty clinicians will include Dr. Donovan Stokes (Shenandoah University), Inez Wyrick (Shenandoah University), Kevin Johnson (No Treble), Zach Rowden (Solo Artist), and Ethan Lawrence (Loudoun County Public Schools).

New this year is the educator workshop, which will include topics like setting up the beginning bassist, navigating shifting and positions, troubleshooting common problems, and more. Completion of the workshop will give teachers a certificate of completion for 15 professional development points towards re-licensure in Virginia.

Marcos Machado:

This year we’re excited to host Marcos Machado, author of the “Tao of Bass” and of the “Integral Technique” course on DiscoverDoubleBass.com. Aside from his busy touring schedule, he is the professor of double bass at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Ju-Fang Liu:

Ju-Fang Liu is the Principal Bassist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, a position she has held since 2003. Before her appointment to the ISO, she performed for a year with the Kansas City Symphony, followed by a fellowship with the New World Symphony in Miami.

Katie Thiroux:

Katie Thiroux is one of the most exciting and in-demand musicians today. Thiroux’s unique gift of simultaneously balancing sultry vocals and virtuosic bass playing leaves audiences worldwide in awe. Her most recent album, “Off Beat,” was awarded a “Best Album Of 2018” by Downbeat Magazine as well as “Rising Star” 2018 & 2019. Thiroux is dedicated to jazz education and outreach for students and audiences conducting masterclasses, workshops and in July 2019 released an online course for the renowned website, Discover Double Bass and was asked to start a jazz camp in Maui, Jazz Maui Camp. In addition, Katie is the director of “Women in Jazz” for the Monterey Jazz Festival and is the #1 selling artist on Capri Records. Upcoming performances include the 2020 SF JAZZ “Women in the Lead.”
