Bass of the Week: Dooley Designs 5-string P/J Bass

Dooley Designs 5 string J-P Bass

This week we’re checking out a five-string P/J bass by Dooley Designs out of Texas. Luthier Scott Dooley called this bass another learning experience due to its 35-inch scale, preamp modifications, extra neck layers, and special top.

The instrument features a mahogany body with a quilt maple top featuring elegant contouring. Its neck continues the maple and mahogany theme while adding a layer of walnut, as well. The ebony fingerboard has maple binding and has slick oval inlays.

The electronics include Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups and a 3-band preamp by Bartolini. Finally, Dooley fitted the bass with a Wilkinson Bad Ass bridge and Graph Tech Ratio tuners.

It seems every bass on bass gear is a 5 string. What about us who only play 4 stringers? I’d like to see something on those basses.
