Rush’s Alex Lifeson Announces New Band

Ever since Rush called it quits in 2018, fans have wondered what would be next for its members. Bassist Geddy Lee has been busy writing books, but now it looks like guitarist Alex Lifeson has started a new band.

Envy of None is a quartet that also features guitarist Alfio Annibalini, singer Maiah Wynne, and bassist Andy Curran, who is known as a founder of Coney Hatch. Together they create a sound that is distinctly different from Rush. Their upcoming self-titled debut is described as 11 tracks that “ricochet between various shades of alternative, experimental and synth rock.” Annibalini, Curran, and Lifeson each contributed programming to the songs.

While the instrumentalists created the sonic atmospheres, they all agree it was Wynne’s introduction to the fold that made it feel like a band with direction.

“I sent over an early version of the song ‘Shadow,’” Curran explains. “When I played what she’d done back to the others they were like, ‘Who is this crazy talented person?!’”

You can get a feel of the band with the lead single, “Liar,” which features some fuzzed out bass lines by Curran.

The closing track, “Western Sunset,” was written by Lifeson as a tribute to the late Neil Peart. “I visited Neil when he was ill,” he says. “I was on his balcony watching the sunset and found inspiration. There’s a finality about a sunset that kinda stayed with me throughout the whole process. It had meaning. It was the perfect mood to decompress after all these different textures… a nice way to close the book.”
