Reader Spotlight: Joseph Garcia

Joseph Garcia

Meet Joseph Garcia, a bassist from Bakersfield, CA and creator of the various “Bass Intros” playlists on Spotify.

Joseph is this week’s No Treble reader in the spotlight (you could be next). Here’s his story…

Bio:

I’m a punk rock bass player with roots in metal. The founding member of SoCal’s punk pros, With Liberty. Curator of the various “Bass Intros” playlists on Spotify, with “Punk Bass Intros 4 Bass Punks” being the most successful and influential.

Location:

Bakersfield, CA

Years experience:

16 years

Why I play the bass:

The hook of “Feel Good Inc.” by Gorillaz and the intro octave switch in “Hypnotize” by System of a Down. Mind blowing.

Gear:

  • Ibanez GAXB
  • Elixir Strings
  • Dunlop Picks
  • Acoustic 300W through an Acoustic 4×10

My Influences:

Metallica’s Jason Newsted, Rob Trujillo, and especially, Cliff Burton.

Fat Mike

Tommy Goober of Toy Dolls

Billy Sheehan

Steve Harris

Elliot of Rebel Spell

My bass superpower/claim to fame:

Being the “Bass Intros” guy has been awesome. Getting messages from bands in Colombia, South Korea, Ireland, and all over the world with links to their songs with Bass intros or even bands recording new music just to be on the playlists has been really awesome to see.

As far as technique, I have a few pedaling tricks on fingers, 16th notes, and triplets in the vein of Steve Harris. With a pick, I double up notes and switch between strings pretty quickly.

Check out “End Justice For All” and “Groundhog Deja Vu” off With Liberty’s debut album.
