St. Paul & The Broken Bones Expand Their Sound On “The Alien Coast”

St. Paul & The Broken Bones: The Alien CoastSt. Paul & The Broken Bones have just released The Alien Coast, which ATO Records calls their “most adventurous and original output yet from an ever-evolving musical powerhouse.” It expands past their classic soul sound to lean into rock, psychedelia, stoner metal, gospel, and jazz-funk.

“Produced by Matt Ross-Spang (Drive-By Truckers, Margo Price, Cut Worms), ‘The Alien Coast’ is the first album St. Paul & The Broken Bones have ever recorded in their hometown of Birmingham,” ATO states. “In creating the ultra-vivid dreamscape threaded throughout ‘The Alien Coast’, the band’s chief lyricist [Paul Janeway] drew inspiration from such disparate sources as Greek mythology, dystopian sci-fi, 17th century Italian sculpture, and colonial-period history books.”

Similarly, bassist Jesse Phillips drew from a wide range of styles to complete the ambitious effort. From the down-tempo grooves of “Minotaur” and “Hunter And His Hounds” to the more danceable “Atlas” and “The Last Dance,” his lines anchor the songs as the hook with perfect melodic points.
