Meshell Ndegeocello Releases “The Omnichord Real Book”
The Omnichord Real Book marks Meshell Ndegeocello’s first album for the legendary Blue Note Records, and as such the bassist/vocalist digs into her jazz side. Blue Note calls it “visionary, expansive, and deeply jazz-influenced.”
“Following her 2018 album ‘Ventriloquism,’ Meshell returns with an album of new original material that taps into a broad spectrum of her musical roots,” they write.
Ndegeocello’s unbelievable voice and bass playing is complemented by many guests including Jason Moran, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Ross, Jeff Parker, Brandee Younger, Julius Rodriguez, Mark Guiliana, Cory Henry, Joan As Police Woman, Thandiswa, and more.
Ndegeocello herself plays bass on about half of the tracks, with the rest covered by multi-instrumentalist Chris Bruce and Burniss Travis II. Check out Bruce playing an Afrobeat-inspired bass line on “ASR”:
The Omnichord Real Book is out now on CD, vinyl and as a digital download (iTunes and Amazon MP3).
