Glenn Hughes Celebrates The 50th Anniversary of Deep Purple’s “Burn” With Tour
Rock icon Glenn Hughes will be hitting the road this month to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Deep Purple’s Burn. The outing will be a co-headline tour with Yngwie Malmsteen.
Burn marked the first album by Deep Purple’s Mark III lineup, including Hughes on bass and vocals, David Coverdale on vocals, and founding members Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, and Jon Lord. It was written at Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire, UK, and ultimately recorded in November of 1973 in Montreux, Switzerland.
“We all became one in this centuries old castle in the UK countryside, it felt like Deep were a new band, with David (Coverdale) and I as new members, we couldn’t wait to start working on new song. The atmosphere was electric, in such amazing surroundings,” Hughes says.
“All the songs on Burn were written in the crypt/dungeon, underneath the great hall. We worked on a new song every day, and we were in the flow. Musically we would play, and work out ideas, and David and I would come up with vocal melodies that would later have lyrics. I remember it like it was yesterday.”
The song “Burn” became an anthem for the band for its burning tempo and vocals.
“The title track was the last song to be written,” Hughes adds. “We came back from the pub, and went down into the crypt, and magic happened.”
The tour kicks off August 16th at the Landis Theater in Vineland, New Jersey and will cross the U.S. through September. The final date is slated for September 23rd at the Capitol Theater in Clearwater, Florida.
