David Barber Releases Debut, “DB & The Soho Nine-Six”
Bassist David Barber has been a fixture on the California music scene for years. He’s played on songs featured on TV shows and he’s toured nationally opening for artists like Crosby, Stills, and Nash and Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks.
Now he’s stepped out front with the self-titled debut album from his solo project, DB & the Soho Nine-Six.
Barber grew up in Oakland, and as you can expect from any product of the Bay Area, there’s a wide range of styles on the album. The bassist lists his influences as Sting, John Patitucci, Curt Smith, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, Muzz Skillings, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clark, and Victor Wooten. You can hear the blend in Barber’s playing, which sits somewhere between funk and jazz with some extra bite.
The burning opener, “Flea Circus,” is complemented by tracks like the serene “Bella Notte” (featuring his daughter playing the bass melody) and the reggae tune “100 Meter Mosey”.
