Kim Gordon’s Second Solo Album, “The Collective,” Out Now
Five years after her solo debut, former Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon has returned with her sophomore album, The Collective. The effort is partly inspired by Jennifer Egan’s 2022 novel, The Candy House, and is more beat oriented than 2019’s No Home Record.
As with her first album, producer Justin Raisen wrote and performed much of the music before sending it to Gordon, who then put on her own vocals and effects. Much of the music is dark and gritty leaning more on hip hop and dub beats rather than the art rock of her former group.
“People used to ask Sonic Youth all the time why our music was so intense or dissonant and I just think that’s what’s in life,” she told The Guardian. “It didn’t feel like I was making an abrasive record. I just feel like it’s realistic.”
