Derek Frank Releases “Origin Story”

Derek Frank: Origin StoryDerek Frank has been around the world playing music with Air Supply, Gwen Stefani, and most recently country-pop superstar Shania Twain. Although he spent the majority of 2023 on the road with Twain, the bassist found time to create his own new album to help tell his story.

Origin Story is an instrumental album that mixes in funk, jazz, blues, and seventies soundtrack music. Frank himself describes the album as “seventies-inspired funky instrumental jams with fewer bass solos than you would expect.”

“In concept, ‘Origin Story’ is a comic book-themed homage to Pittsburgh, the city where I was born, discovered my love for music, and decided what I wanted to be when I grew up,” he says. “The album was produced by the legendary Jim Scott, and features my live band (Carey Frank, Demian Arriaga, Joshua Ray Gooch, and Randy Cooke) along with special guests Karl Denson, Brent Mason, The Fat City Horns, among many other incredible musicians.”

As Frank says, there are only a few bass solos on the album. Even so, his bass lines and tones are absolutely killer. The album kicks off with “Demon on Wheels,” which would totally fit into a seventies car chase scene.

Origin Story is available now digitally via Bandcamp, iTunes, Amazon MP3, and more.
