Brian Bromberg Pays Tribute to a Legend on “LaFaro”

Brian Bromberg: LaFaroScott LaFaro was only 25 when he tragically died in a car accident in 1961, but the body of work he left changed jazz bass playing for good. He influenced the majority of today’s best bassists. That includes Brian Bromberg, who has just released a trio album in his honor.

LaFaro sees Bromberg swinging hard with pianist Tom Zink and drummer Charles Ruggiero as they perform songs that LaFaro put his stamp on. The trio leans into songs from LaFaro’s time with pianist Bill Evans: “Solar,” “Nardis,” “Blue in Green,” and more. They also cover the LaFaro’s own composition, “Gloria’s Step,” while Bromberg offers his own tune, “Scotty’s Song.”

“I hope you can appreciate the spirit in this recording and the respect I have for Scott LaFaro’s enormous contribution to jazz bass playing and jazz music in general,” Bromberg writes in the liner notes. “Thank you, Scotty, for paving the way and opening the door for the rest of us who have dedicated our lives to being a jazz bassist.”
