Medeski Martin & Wood Documentary Coming Soon

Not Not Jazz

Over thirty years since their formation, the “avant-groove” band Medeski Martin & Wood are still revered as some of the best and most creative improvisors on the planet. Their exploratory performances go deep by blending all sorts of genres. It may be hard to fathom how they build such incredible songs in the moment, but now fans will get a little better understanding.

The 2019 documentary Not Not Jazz was screened at a handful of special events, but now it will finally be available to the public on DVD and Video On Demand. Directed by Jason Miller, the film follows the band’s “unique and wholly improvisational process” as they worked on a new album at Allaire Studio in Woodstock, New York 25 years after they had formed.

“I am deeply grateful to have met John, Billy and Chris and to have been entrusted with documenting their process as musicians and exploring their personal lives,” says Miller. “It’s been a long and arduous journey to get the film made and released, and I learned a lot from them along the way. It’s my hope that everyone who watches the film will take something away as well.”

Keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood, and drummer Billy Martin crossed paths in New York City through the ’80s. Their first official gig together was in 1991 at the Village Gate and soon they were touring across the country and recording. Their sound also evolved from strictly acoustic instruments to a mix of electric and acoustic with Wood switching between electric bass and double bass.
