Janek Gwizdala Celebrates 20 Years of “Mystery to Me” with All-New Bass Parts and Remixes

It’s been two decades since Janek Gwizdala first stepped out as a band leader and he’s celebrating with a reissue. The 20th Anniversary Edition of Mystery to Me features the nine songs with new remixes and a remastering. Gwizdala also updated the bass parts.
“It has been some months in the making now, searching for old session files on hard drives I was doubtful would ever spin again,” Gwizdala wrote in an email. “There was a gauntlet of emotion to navigate when working on this anniversary project, and as I fired up each track to re-record the bass parts I was reminded just how lucky I was to start my career as an artist like this.”
Mystery to Me was originally recorded at Manhattan Center Studios in front of a live audience. The bassist assembled an incredible band including Jojo Mayer, Tim Miller, Elliot Mason, John Ellis, Gretchen Parlato, Gregoire Maret, and Mark Turner. The entire record was made in one take.
Check out the new version of “Time Stands Still”:
“I hope that by putting this anniversary edition out there with all-new bass parts, the music can have a second chance at life,” Gwizdala concludes. “It was, as you might imagine, not even close to being a commercial success the first time around, and I have no expectations for that in 2025 and beyond. ‘Success,’ commercial or otherwise, is never the goal. Contributing to society and getting to work with my favorite humans is always first and foremost.”
Mystery to Me 20th Anniversary Edition is out now on Spotify. Gwizdala is planning a limited edition vinyl release with details for that coming soon.
