How Petros Klampanis Captured the Beauty of the Unnoticed on “Latent Info”

Petros Klampanis: Latent Info

Bassist Petros Klampanis has returned with a new album called Latent Info. For his latest effort, the bassist opted for a trio setting with pianist Kristjan Randalu and Ziv Ravitz. He also chose to record the album all in one room, as opposed to modern recording trends.

Klampanis created the music on Latent Info as an homage to “the beauty and power of the unnoticed.” It takes its name from a term from sound engineer George Kariotis that refers to uncharted sonic information that gets into each instrument’s microphone while recording.

“This album serves as a heartfelt tribute to all that lingers unseen, concealed in latent mode, often neglected or left unnoticed in the hustle of life’s cacophony,” a press release explains. “Within the musical dialogues documented in this recording, the three masterful musicians explore the realm of the unspoken and the overlooked. It’s a homage to the unexpressed emotions, the unsaid words, and the conversations that never found their voice.”

As such, the music is often poignant, heartfelt, and subtle. Klampanis has masterful phrasing and simple, elegant melodies to portray each song’s emotions. He also has a masterful command of the instrument. Check out the in-studio video for the opening track, “Over the Calypsó Deep,” which opens with some creative use of harmonics.

Latent Info is out now on digital platforms, while CD and vinyl editions are available through Bandcamp.
