The Wood Brothers have been consistently touring over the past two years, but they carved out some time for the studio, too. The trio has announced that their ninth album, Puff of Smoke, will drop on August 1st. They bolstered the announcement with a music video for the first single, “Witness,” directed by bassist Chris Wood.

Vocalist and guitarist Oliver Wood says the music on Puff of Smoke is “brimming with joy in the face of the human condition in 2025.”

The Wood Brothers: Puff of Smoke“We’re not in control, and that can be good news,” he says. “Puff of Smoke speaks to the idea of letting go and taking the ride.”

Percussionist Jano Rix joins Chris and Oliver to create their unique sound. As fans of the band can expect, their ninth studio effort is an expansion of their ever-evolving sound.

“There’s a lot to unpack musically in this band, and it’s been this evolutionary process over the years and on each subsequent record,” Chris Wood states. “Over time, the diversity of things we can do has all become part of our language.”

“This album is a little bit schizophrenic and eclectic,” Oliver adds. “It goes in a number of different directions.”

Puff of Smoke will be released on August 1st on vinyl, CD, and digital formats (Apple Music, and Amazon Music). The Wood Brothers will be on tour this year with The String Cheese Incident and St. Paul and the Broken Bones. See below for their full itinerary.
