Watch Paul Jackson Front The Headhunters on The Midnight Special in a Rare Live Take of “God Made Me Funky”
The Midnight Special YouTube channel has been dropping some serious throwbacks lately, and this one stopped me in my tracks. Paul Jackson is front and center with The Headhunters, playing “God Made Me Funky.” It doesn’t get much better.
The Headhunters, originally put together by Herbie Hancock, were way ahead of their time, and Jackson’s playing was a huge part of that. His lines are funky, loose, and fearless, but still super dialed in. Total jazz brain with a deep pocket. And on this performance, he’s not just holding it down on bass. He’s handling lead vocals too. Just a masterclass from one of the greats.
