Tom Fowler’s Thunderous Bass Drives Frank Zappa’s “Apostrophe’” in Rare 1974 Live Performance

Here’s one that made my day. Zappa’s team recently released this long-shelved footage from 1974, a live performance of “Apostrophe’” filmed for the Cheaper Than Cheep TV special and tucked away for decades.

This one is all about the groove. Tom Fowler delivers that unmistakable heavy, bluesy foundation that drives the tune. He’s locked in tight with Zappa’s snarling guitar lines, giving the song its signature swagger. It’s deceptively simple but completely satisfying, the kind of bass work that never overplays but lands with authority on every note.

Tom Fowler was always one of my favorite Zappa-era bassists for exactly this reason. He could handle the most complex charts, but when it was time to lay it down, he really laid it down.

Now that this footage has finally surfaced, it’s well worth a watch. Check it out and let us know what you think of Tom Fowler’s groove on this classic.
