Joe Hubbard’s “Mastering Triad Pair Lines” Brings New Vocabulary to Jazz Bass Soloing

Bassist and renowned educator Joe Hubbard has just published a new book to boost your jazz bass soloing skills. Mastering Triad Pair Lines Volume One: A New Vocabulary for Jazz Bass Soloing is the first in a series that introduces a sophisticated approach to improvising solos. Hubbard says the book addresses a critical gap in jazz bass education by providing a systematic methodology for advanced harmonic concepts.
“There are no abstract concepts to hide behind when you’re incorporating triad pairs,” explains Hubbard. “Every note has to earn its place through musical merit. This book teaches bassists how to think harmonically while maintaining melodic integrity.”
The book focuses on how to combine two major triads positioned a whole stop apart. What seems like a simple idea can be explored into a world of new sounds and harmonic ideas. The approach essentially eliminates “avoid notes” to give you vocabulary that works across complex chord progressions.
“The method systematically explores how these triad pairs can be applied over multiple chord qualities, including Cmaj7, D7(sus4), F#7(alt), and A-7, providing immediate practical applications for professional-level jazz performance,” a press release explains. Hubbard adds, “The technical challenges presented in this book introduce intervallic structures that most bass players would never default to. These concepts provide access to harmonic territories that remain unexplored by conventional methods.”
Mastering Triad Pair Lines Volume One is laid out into 12 progressive exercises and 12 original etudes, all written in both standard notation and tablature for accessibility. Each exercise and etude has detailed analysis and practice methods with an emphasis on ear training.
