Newly Released Footage of the Beatles’ First U.S. Concert Captures Beatlemania in Full Swing

A newly released video of the Beatles’ first U.S. concert has been making the rounds, and it’s a time capsule worth revisiting. The show took place on February 11, 1964, at the Washington Coliseum, just two days after their Ed Sullivan appearance. What followed was 40 minutes of pure chaos, caught on film in front of more than 8,000 screaming fans.

Paul McCartney is in full command of the moment, bouncing across the boxing-ring-style stage while laying down tight, melodic lines on his Hofner. The band opens with “Roll Over Beethoven” and never lets up. McCartney is all smiles, singing, playing, and somehow keeping it all grounded while the crowd absolutely loses it.

The energy is off the charts. Fans are on the verge of storming the stage. Security is barely hanging on. The band rotates mid-set so each side of the arena gets a view, and the screams never stop. It’s wild, fast, and unfiltered.

If you’ve never seen it, this footage captures the Beatles before the polish. McCartney’s tone is punchy, the band is raw, and the whole thing feels like it could fly off the rails at any moment.

With all the acrimony and jadedness that crept in during the recording of the White Album, they should have watched this performance during the sessions to remind them that they played for fun and each other. They left the mop tops behind a few years earlier and became serious creators and businessmen, but, they lost some of the joy, especially after Brian’s passing. Thankfully, they got some of it back for Abbey Road, and I am happy for that.
