Inside Dream Theater’s Studio Lock-In: Portnoy’s Back, and It Shows
Dream Theater stripped it all back for their episode of Ernie Ball’s BIG SOUND series. No stage. No audience. Just the band inside their own studio playing like nobody’s watching.
The session features three tracks. Night Terror and Midnight Messiah from their latest album Parasomnia and Panic Attack from Octavarium. The whole thing is tight and intense but John Myung’s playing is what really holds it together.
Armed with his Ernie Ball Music Man Bongo 6 Myung delivers a performance that’s equal parts fluid and fierce. His tone stays clear and present locking in with Portnoy’s return like no time has passed. He handles the shifting rhythms of Panic Attack effortlessly then stretches out melodically on the newer material without overplaying a note.
There’s no showboating. No wasted motion. Just one of the most technically gifted bassists doing what he does best with the camera close enough to catch every detail.
