The Deep Pocket: Derrick Hodge’s Miura Bass Shines in Montreal with Nate Smith and Lalah Hathaway

Derrick Hodge has a way of making every note feel like a statement, and this Montreal Jazz Festival session is no exception. Performing alongside Nate Smith, Lalah Hathaway, and James Francies, Hodge lays down a foundation that’s both deep and fluid, carrying the music with an effortless pulse.

He’s playing his Miura MB2, a bass that has become an extension of his voice. The tone is rich and vocal, with that unmistakable clarity Hodge brings to every project. Watching him move between supportive lines and melodic turns, you can hear how perfectly the Miura responds to his touch.  Derrick is also running through a Markbass rig.

This performance captures why Hodge remains one of the most expressive bassists of his generation. Whether he’s locking in with Nate Smith’s pocket or coloring Lalah Hathaway’s harmonies, his feel and sound are pure artistry.

Talk about laying back on the pocket. Not sure I’d say Derrick is locked in at all. His time is very loose IMO. Great tone though!
