Kala Reissues Hutch Hutchinson Signature U-Bass With Spruce and Hawaiian Koa Tops

Kala Hutch Hutchinson U-Basses 2025

Kala has reintroduced the Hutch Hutchinson Signature U-Bass for 2025 with two new models. The miniature basses, which have a 20.375-inch scale, come with either a solid spruce top or a solid Hawaiian Koa top, each featuring distinct “4-Vent” soundports.

“I’m totally stoked about the HH Kala Ubass being reissued with the original spruce top and now also with a solid Hawaiian Koa top,” Hutchinson shared on Facebook. “Among other improvements, it now has a truss rod, which is something that I lobbied for when it was originally released over a decade ago. [It] makes for a tighter and more stable instrument all around. And love the Solid Hawaiian Koa top… a real beaut. A big Mahalo to Mike Upton and all at Kala Brand Music and Kala UBass for the improvements.”

The spruce model is crafted with mahogany back and sides, while the koa top is supported with an acacia body. Each is built with a mahogany neck, a rosewood fingerboard, and a Fishman® U•BASS preamp. One other difference is the strings. The spruce ships with Road Toad Pahoehoe polyurethane strings for “a supple, upright‑like feel” while the koa comes with flat wounds by Gallistrings.

The Kala Hutch Hutchinson Signature U-Bass is available now with prices of $599 for the spruce top and $899 for the koa top.
