Inside the Chaos and Magic of 90s Rock: Melissa Auf der Maur’s Story Finally Told

As part of the biggest bands of the ’90s, Melissa Auf der Maur has quite the story to tell. And now she will.
The bassist has announced a new book, Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A 90s Rock Memoir, which will be released on March 17th via Da Capo. Auf der Maur chronicles her upbringing and rise to rock’s biggest stages with storytelling that’s described as “part rock memoir, part travel diary, and part psychedelic scrapbook.”
She grew up in Montreal’s vibrant cultural scene and developed a passion for music. Her band Tinker opened for The Smashing Pumpkins one night, leading to a decade of fever-dream experiences. Billy Corgan recommended her to Courtney Love to join the band Hole in 1994, just after the deaths of Kurt Cobain and former Hole bassist Kristen Pfaff. She would briefly join the Pumpkins as a touring member in 2000 before launching a solo career.
“This book is about the decade that defined me and my generation, 1991-2001, and my life in the rock bands which allowed me to have a front row seat to an incredibly visceral and unforgettable moment in the counterculture,” said Auf der Maur. “It’s a love letter to the power of music and one-of-a-kind voices that make the world a cooler place; it’s also an ode to the analog, and what magic has been lost. Sharing what our generation witnessed, and what the world once was, in my hope of building a more livable future together.”
Even the Good Girls Will Cry: A 90s Rock Memoir includes interviews with Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl, Rufus Wainwright, Michael Stipe, Ben Stiller, and more. It will be out on March 17th in Hardcover, Kindle, and Audiobook formats.
