Michael League Plots Ambitious Blue Note NYC Residency Featuring a “Band of Bassists”

Snarky Puppy bassist and bandleader Michael League has announced a three-week residency at the Blue Note in New York City, which promises to be epic. The run will include 10 groups of varying instrumentation from January 6th to January 25th.
“These groups have been crafted specifically for this residency and League has even written some new music for several of the bands,” GroundUP Music writes. “This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these unique combinations of artists together so don’t miss out.”
League & Friends will kick off with two nights of the Snarky Puppy Dallas Funk Quintet followed by two nights of a group dubbed “Band of Bassists.” It will feature League with Kinga Głyk, Nigel Hall, Larnell Lewis, and Otis McDonald.
“[The concert is a] game of musical chairs with this band of multi-instrumentalists, all of whom are bassists, performing a mix of original music and legendary songs from low-end history,” Blue Note explains.
The rest of the run will feature a trio with Nate Smith and James Francies, his duo with Bill Laurance, and evenings focusing on drummers, guitarists, and songwriters. The residency culminates in a GroundUP Music showcase on January 25th.
“I’m honored by and grateful to Blue Note for giving me the opportunity to present so many unique projects for your eyes and ears in January,” League shared on Instagram. “Most of them have been crafted specifically for the residency, and since I obviously have way too much time on my hands, I’ve decided to write new music for several of these bands.”
