Bass of the Week: McDiarmid Squid Bass With Spalted Maple Top and Custom Inlay

McDiarmid Guitars Custom Squid Bass Full

Our bass of the week is a stunning creation by McDiarmid Guitars out of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Tony Rombola, who owns the bass, gave us a rundown of the specs.

The custom Squid Bass pairs a mahogany body with a spalted maple top, highlighted by a squid inlay crafted from purpleheart and epoxy. The deep sea beast’s eye is mother-of-pearl. Its neck is made of maple with mahogany and purpleheart stringers to continue the wood theme. The fretboard is olive wood with gold frets, a GraphTech nut, and abalone inlay dots.

McDiarmid fit the bass with a custom Guitarmory passive humbucker (housed in a matching wood cover) and a GraphTech Acousti-Phonic piezo under the bridge. Finally, all of the gold hardware is made by GraphTech.
