Hear Joe Dart Lock In on Bass in Vulfmon’s “Rocco Darto Cato”
Some songs ease their way in. “Rocco Darto Cato” does not. It opens with Joe Dart’s bass groove, front and center, setting the tone before anything else has a chance to speak.
Joe is playing a P bass, and the sound is unmistakable. Boomy low end and a dark tone, I would bet he is playing with flatwound strings and/or that tone control dialed back. (just a guess). He establishes the pocket immediately and everything that follows is built on that foundation. As the arrangement fills out, the textures start to bloom. There is lap steel adding a subtle shimmer around the edges and Louis Cato steps forward with some excellent solo moments. Cory Wong stays locked into the rhythm role that is tight and disciplined.
But this one belongs to the low end. From the first note, Joe defines the mood and the momentum. The band moves around him, but the center never shifts. For bass players, it is a lesson in authority and restraint. Start strong. Stay locked in. Let the groove do the talking.
