Kira Roessler Returns With “Enigma,” a New Album of Minimalist Bass Storytelling

Kira Roessler has announced her second solo album, EnigmaKira.
“Enigma is the continuation of the narration of my life through song – honest, if over-dramatized statements about what is in those moments,” he says. “Leaning into the raw feeling of it all. I feel very lucky to be able to share some new music with those who listen.”
It also continues Roessler’s minimalistic, bass-driven compositions that focus on the emotional intensity through restraint. That feeling is crystallized in the album’s first single, “How Could You.”
“Since I rarely find myself in conflict with anyone, there it was – how could you hurt me, even if I was wrong. Treated as a jazzy mantra, because that’s what came out.”
Roessler was a member of Black Flag from 1983 to 1985, during which time the seminal punk outfit released five albums. Afterward, she formed the bass duo Dos with Mike Watt. She’s also an award-winning dialogue editor for film, but the bass is central to her identity.
“I mean, I’ve been playing bass longer than I’ve been a woman, you know? So if you think about it that way, it’s like an extension of myself,” she told us in a 2022 interview. “And so when I have feelings to express or situations to process or whatever, the bass is how I communicate. It’s how I express it. It’s how I get through difficulties or joys. For me, it is the mechanism by which I process life.”
Enigma will be out on July 10th. You can pre-order it on CD or vinyl now via Bandcamp.
