No Edits, No Plan: Moto Fukushima Improvises an Entire Album in the Utah Wilderness
In an age of advancing technology, Moto Fukushima was looking for something organic for his new album, Sounding. So he packed up his bass and went out in search of the “sound of a place – raw improvisation surrounded by beautiful nature.”
“I’m genuinely excited about all the new technology, AI and everything it brings. But as a contrast, I wanted to try the complete opposite – no editing, just raw sound,” he says of the album. “One beautiful morning in a forest in southern Utah, I started playing and didn’t stop for thirty minutes. No plan, no edits.”
Fukushima then curated nine moments from that half-hour sonic adventure to create the album. His experiment clearly worked because each track has a fresh, inspired feel. Fukushima’s intoxicating style is in full effect, with lush chords and graceful melodies. If you didn’t know it was all improvised, you’d think these songs were fully composed.
