J Dilla’s “Fall in Love” Gets a Deep-Groove Rework from Kiefer and Erik Shiboski

J Dilla changed the way a generation heard the beat.

His grooves could feel late, early, crooked, and perfectly right all at once. That approach helped loosen hip hop from the grid and became a language of its own, influencing beatmakers, drummers, bassists, and the whole world that grew around hip hop, neo soul, and jazz. More than two decades later, musicians are still trying to get inside that pocket.

Kiefer, bassist Erik Shiboski, and drummer Luke Titus get their chance with “Fall in Love” in a new installment of Over Everything’s The Garden Sessions.

The tune originally appeared on Slum Village’s 2000 album Fantastic, Vol. 2 with Dilla handling the production.

Erik Shiboski is playing a five string Fender Jazz Bass through a Fender amp, he gets way down inside the groove and stays there. He gives the groove room to breathe, then makes every note count. His connection with Kiefer makes the whole thing feel less like a cover and more like three musicians having a conversation in Dilla’s language.
