Johnny Blue Skies Takes “It Ain’t All Flowers” Into a 10 Minute Psychedelic Jam
The Dark Clouds are Kevin Black on bass, Laur Joamets on guitar, Robbie Crowell on keys and saxophone, and Miles Miller on drums. It is a serious band and one with plenty of history together. Black, Miller, and Joamets all played on Simpson’s 2014 album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, which included the original version of “It Ain’t All Flowers.”
Black appears to be playing a vintage Fender Precision Bass through a Fender bass amp here. There is some nice history in that setup, too. Producer Dave Cobb has recalled Black recording the Metamodern sessions through a small Fender Bassman.
The album version of “It Ain’t All Flowers” was already pretty far out there. The band takes things much further in Berkeley. This version clocks in at 10:33 and develops into a huge psychedelic jam with Black and Miller holding things together while Simpson and Joamets head for outer space.
This is a good one.
